A HOMECOMING ANTHEM FOR CANADIAN TROOPS
Toronto songwriter releases “Soldier, Welcome Home” as the Canadian Forces wind down combat mission in Afghanistan – sale proceeds to help support Wounded Warriors
TORONTO – As Canadian troops begin the process of withdrawing from Afghanistan, a Toronto songwriter has composed a tune to welcome them back.
“Soldier, Welcome Home” is Bob Reid’s second song to honour the efforts of the men and women of the Canadian Forces in Afghanistan. His first, “Highway of Heroes,” reached #1 on the Nielsen/SoundScan Canadian Singles chart shortly after its release in late 2009, and continued to chart for two separate 16-week periods.
“I wondered what kind of homecoming our troops would receive,” Reid said, talking about the origin of “Soldier, Welcome Home.”
“I feared their return home might go unnoticed after such a tremendous sacrifice – and that would be a real shame.”
“I wanted to give them a message of thanks and gratitude for the job they did, and to let them know how happy countless Canadians are to see them coming safely home. It’s kind of a musical pat on the back for a job well done,” he said.
The song was inspired by Reid’s first-hand experience with Canadian troops in Afghanistan, when he performed at a concert for NATO forces with Toronto band The Carpet Frogs at Kandahar Airfield in March of last year.
“Soldier, Welcome Home” is available for digital download from iTunes and on CD via www.soldiersongs.ca. As with “Highway of Heroes,” a share of sale proceeds will go to support the Wounded Warriors fund.
Lyrics to “Soldier, Welcome Home”
It’s a special kind of man, and woman who understands
Freedom is a gift, but it’s not free
They’re the ones who sacrifice, do the duty, pay the price
Of a safer world, and peace for you and me
Now they’re such a welcome sight for us to see
(Chorus)
Welcome home
Welcome home
The battle’s all behind you, welcome home
Though a half a world away, we were behind you every day
And with grateful hearts, we’re so glad to say
Soldier, welcome home
Help elected leaders rule, keep the children safe at school
Things we take for granted every day
But that’s the mission, that’s the call, and you answered standing tall
In a distant land, you forged a better way
Now it feels so good to finally get to say
(Chorus)
Together we remember every fallen one
The heroes we think of every day
They laid down their lives beneath a blazing sun
Now among the stars, they help to guide the way
It’s a special kind of man, and woman who understands
Freedom is a gift, but it ain’t free
They’re the ones who sacrificed, did the duty, paid the price
Of a safer world and peace for you and me
Heroes in our hearts you’ll always be
(Chorus)
Stand down, dismissed, rest easy now
Soldier, welcome home
